Peer Pressure and Making Wise Choices |
Nothing is more important to teens than other teens. In middle and high school life,
peer groups rule. This can be good or it can be bad: the most important decision
a young person makes is the choice of a role model. "Who will you allow to
influence you, and what will you allow them to influence you to do?" This is
the question James asks throughout this challenging and powerful program. James uses his magic to demonstrate how powerful influence can be, even when we're not aware that we are being influenced, and challenges students to become conscious of their influences, surround themselves with people who really care, people who will be positive role models. |

James realizes the importance of healthy self-esteem, and solid academics. He has
a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master of divinity degree in theology.
He is a member of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and at one time
taught freshman composition at Cal State Northridge. |
Anti-bullying/Tolerance |
We live in a post-Columbine world, and most schools are now very concerned to address
the issue of bullying. In this assembly, James addresses ways for students
to deal with bullies, and in particular stresses that "telling is not tattling":
that is, students need to recognize that informing the teacher or other adult
about bullying behavior is not "tattling," but a crucial intervention to help
someone. The program also addresses the role of peer-pressure in bullying behaviors,
since so often it is a group of kids who are abusing a single individual.
James encourages students to be willing to stand up to the group, or at least
walk away, and not be led into bullying behaviors by their friends. |
James exposes how tobacco advertisements are similar to magicians' tricks, but with
a different purpose: to hook you on a drug called nicotine. When students watch
a magic show they want to figure out how it's done; James encourages students
to show the same healthy skepticism towards tobacco ads, or "friends" who try
to get them to smoke. Will cigarettes make you cool, attractive, macho, healthy,
or mature? James' magic demonstrates for students that such promises are nothing
